- Ambitious - he strives to be at the top, introduced as already a Thane revealing his high ranking
- Brave - his friends describe him as being brave
- Weak - subconsciously Macbeth cannot hold his own, guilt of murder overwhelms and destroys him, as does his ambition
- Contrasting - he is at once too ambitious to allow his conscience to stop him from murdering his way to the top and too conscientious to be happy with himself as a murderer
- Moral Compass that he does not follow - Macbeth know what is morally right but his ambition overthrows this.

- Antagonist - he killed many other character and created turmoil in the play (interrupted the chain of being)
- King - Once duncan was slain, Macbeth was crowned king, a title which he did not earn
- Noble Warrior - In battle Macbeth is courageous and daring
- Murderer - He killed his king, friends and friend of friends
- Tyrant - a bad person
