Longitudinal Studies

Advantages

  • See first hand factors that effect life
  • Ability to pick up changes in attitudes and behaviour over time
  • Comparisions between groups and identify causes
  • Identify corrolations between groups

Disadvantages

  • Number of years to carry out
  • Drop out rate means sample size drops
  • Views may be significantly different between participants
  • Hawthorne effect

Evaluation

Longitudinal studies allow a researcher to view how situations change over time. But this can be effected by the dropout rate and the number of years that the study takes place such as the 7up study. The hawthorne effect also has an influence over behaviour
