Advantages

  • research found those categorised as external tended to be more easily persuaded and more conforming than those who were judged internal

Disadvantages

  • issue with external - less self-motivated may achieve less, seen as bad it it meant to - no evidence for it being harmful

Evaluation

locus of control shown to be related to a predisposition to normative SI -- study of undergraduates assessed predisposition to normative and informative SI as well as stance on locus of control  - found correlation between external locus of control and normative SI but no links with informative SIbecoming more external - meta analysis compared 1960 with 2002 and found young Americans more likely to blame misfortune on outside forces
