Light Vs Electron Microscopes

Similarities

  • Use light to form an image
  • Small and cheap
  • Magnify up to X2000 their image
  • Can be used almost anywhere
  • Produce a 2D image
  • Resolving power= 200nm

Differences

  • Use a beam of electrons to form an image
  • Large and expensive
  • Magnify things up too X2,000,000 their size
  • Got to be used in a room where humidity, pressure and temperature are controlled.
  • Resolving power= 0.2nm (the distance between 2 atoms)
  • TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICOSCOPES= produce a 2D image with a high resolution and magnification
  • SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE= produces a 3D image with a high resolution but not as high magnification.

Overall comparison

Resolution= the ability to distinguish between two separate objects. Image size= magnification X real size.To find the magnification you need to multiply the eyepiece lens by the objective lens you are using.
