Animalistic

Mental Illness - Unaware in 1930's Soledad, California

  • Terrior - A terrier is relating to his loyalty towards George who he follows unconditionally and looks up to.
  • Bear - A bear can clearly represent his giant body and incredible strength as well as unpredictable behaviour.
  • Coyote - Coyotes are hunted and shot.
  • Horse - A horse is often controlled by someone else which could possibly represent Georges relationship with Lennie.
  • Like a Child -Stubborn -Doesn't listen much -Selfish and thinking only of himself or George -Obsession with soft things -Helpless without George (George tells him to hit Curley) -Forgetful
  • Father-Son relationship - His mindset never grows up
  • No Guilt - Lack of remorse when he kills things, only seeing the consequences for himself.
  • Unaware about society & it's issues -Stroking women got him into trouble twice -No idea why he shouldn't go into Crooks' room.

Strength

Relationships

  • Unaware of his strength - Able to kill things without meaning to - Good worker but also can cause him alot of trouble such as when he broke Curleys hand and killed his wife.
  • Antagonist
  • George (Father-Son Relationship) - Protective over George but relies on him to get him out of tricky situations (told to hit Curley) and give him comfort (story of their 'American Dream') -Knows how to manipulate him to get his way (I'll go right off into those mountains) -Opposites in appearance -They have each other so they're not lonely like most ranch men.
  • Curley - Curley dislikes Lennie instantly, intimidated by his size -Lennie avoids him if possible -Lennie crushes Curleys hand in 1 fist DIDNT fight back when Curley was attacking him -Once Lennie kills Curleys wife, Curley is out to kill him by shooting him in the gut so he would not only die but experience pain (Curley wants revenge for Lennie embarrassing him)
  • Curley's wife - Lennie is 'fascinated' by her, thinks she is 'purty' -Lennie is told to keep away by George as she is considered '*********' -Start talking in the barn which eventually leads to her death Lennie is perhaps attracted to her so much because she has pretty dresses and soft hair, doesn't care for her personality or want love as he's got MENTAL ILLNESS -He doesn't care that he killed her, only worried about what George will think and the consequences affecting him
  • Crooks - Unaware that he is doing wrong by being in a black man's room, unaware about society, unaware of his own status in society, his actions (unlike Curley) are not for popularity and reputation
