Advantages

  • Verstehen, see things through the eye of interviewees and able to gain true empathy.
  • The findings are qualitative and in depth.
  • There is no premature closure.
  • There is huge potential for flexibility.
  • There is no confusion over the meanings of questions.

Disadvantages

  • The sample size tends to be small.
  • It is not a systematic method, as results are difficult to verify.
  • The method can lack objectivity and bias can occur.
  • Inequalities in power and status between the interviewer and interviewee lower validity.
  • Gender and ethnic differences between the interviewer and interviewee can also distort the findings.
