Learning Table Two: Unstructured/Informal Interviews

Advantages

The informality allows rapport to build up, increasing the validity.
Verstehen, see things through the eye of interviewees and able to gain true empathy.
The findings are qualitative and in depth.
There is no premature closure.
There is huge potential for flexibility.
There is no confusion over the meanings of questions.

Disadvantages

The sample size tends to be small.
It is not a systematic method, as results are difficult to verify.
The method can lack objectivity and bias can occur.
Inequalities in power and status between the interviewer and interviewee lower validity.
Gender and ethnic differences between the interviewer and interviewee can also distort the findings.
