- Open justice- judged by non professionals and independence from the government = fair... Juries - jury equity - Kronlid
- Juries - equity and fairness, they can ignore the judges direction, perverse verdicts show dissatisfaction with the law
- Mags - bring local knowledge to proceedings - Paul v DPP and they save the tax payer up to £100 million a year

Disadvantages
- Lack of legal knowledge, training and qualifications - R v Bingham - prosecution bias...justices and juries are seen as irrational and not up to the job - R v Younh
- Magistrates are over reliant on clerk - lack of ability and inconsistency in sentencing - R v Eccles Justices 1992
- Juries - perverse verdicts result in undemocratic decision making as by pass laws made by Parliament
