L13 - Monitoring Water Pollution (BIOTIC INDEX)

Advantages

  • 1. Monitor past and present pollution. This is a long-term measure.
  • 2. Help trace the source of pollution (using the gradient of presence and absence).
  • 3. Very sensitive to pollution.
  • 4. Very low concentration which bio-accmulate may be detectable.
  • 5. Do not need expensive monitoring equipment (because you are simply identifying the species).

Disadvantages

  • 1. Time-consuming.
  • 2. Difficult to interpret by non-biologists.
  • 3. Identification may be difficult.

Evaluation

The animals living in a stream provide the best indicators of that stream's overall health and condition.The higher the biodiversity, the more ecologically stable an area is.
