- No previous big earthquake
- Buildings had not been yet tested to see if they were earthquake proof
- Emergency services were unpreapred
- Weak structures were only strong enough for other natural disasters

- Pipes burst
- Roads collasped - Express Way didn't reopen untill August the following year
- Electrical wires collasped
- 300,000 were injured
- Homes were set alight
- No water or electrics for up to 10 days
- Big companies were temporarily closed
