Kantian Ethics

?

Kantian Ethics- You should use reason to make moral judgements based on what you would will at the same time to be universalised logically

Advantages

  • Do not treat people as a means to an end- selfless & respect for the individual
  • Objective- focuses on what would universally be accepted as moral
  • Uses reason- not influenced by exterior motives

Disadvantages

  • Illogical- How can we judge how far something is universalisabel?
  • People will come to different conclusion of morality- What we will to be universal others do not
  • What is logically impossible does not equate to immorality
  • Only uses reason- Evidently other factors contribute to our moral choices, such as emotion and experience
  • Deontological & duty bound- Focuses on the act and not the oucome; A good act does not have to have good intentions or a beneficial outcome

Evaluation

In my opinion, Kant's theory has many flaws and is impractical. Moreover, even if the theory was logically possible, I dispute the idea that our ethical decisions should be based on reason alone and rather that emotion and personal experience should affect our moral judgments since it is my view that a good act must have good intentions.
