The Categorical Imperative

Advantages

  • People generally have the same attitude towards morality.
  • Distinguishes between Duty and Inclination.
  • There are clear criteria for Morality.
  • Respects human life and treats everyone equally.
  • One universal  rule that applies absolutely to anyone at all times.
  • Most people recognise the ideas of Duty.

Disadvantages

  • Putting duty above everything else seems cold and inhumane.
  • There is no place for love or compassion.
  • Not everyone agrees that duty is the best motive.
  • Not an easy principle to apply in real life situations quickly.
  • It is human nature to consider the consequences before acting.

Evaluation

The categorical imperative puts the respect of humanity and equality before anything else. Although, to put duty before human emotions such as love and compassion is difficult. In a normal situation it is highly likely that human nature would be to act emotionally before from a position of duty. While everyone has a relatively similar attitude towards morality, it is often the case that duty will be seen as a lesser motive in a situation.
