KAME TERRACE AND LATERAL MORAINE

Similarities

  • They are ridges which run along the edge of a glacier between the valley side.
  • Without looking at the rock formation they appear to be the same an can't be differentiated.
  • Both are depositional features.

Differences

  • In a kame terrace, the material is stratified.
  • Whereas in lateral moraine the material is unstratified.
  • Kame terraces form due to meltwater/supraglacial streams.
  • Whereas lateral moraine forms due to an accumulation of weathered rock between a glacier and the valley side.

Overall comparison

Whilst they appear very similar from the outside, the composition of material in kame terraces and lateral moraines are very different. This is due to their different formations. One is formed by meltwater streams whilst the other is formed by weathered rock.
