Jesus as just a teacher of wisdom?

Similarities

  • For some scholars the resurrection of Jesus demonstrates his wisdom (he has a special relationship with God) but not a lot of evidence
  • Other scholars e.g. John Hick advocate for ********* away "supernatural christ" leaving the authentic Jesus - just a teacher. This view suggest christianity is not the only way to truth and wisdom supporting pluralism. Jesus' miricales should just be seen as symbols of his close relationship with God for inter-faith dialogue BUT if this is true, it is not clear how Jesus would get his authority if he was just ordinary
  • E.P. Sanders - Jesus' views of people at the time were different but not unique. It is a catagorical mistake to look at the history of Jesus as we confuse history with faith
  • Rudolph Bultmann - 'demythologise the bible' - events such as the resurrection have sprititual meaning, not real meaning. We can know 'almost nothing' of istorical Jesus, it is the CHRIST OF FAITH through the church after his death influenced by experiences of christ which is important

Differences

  • C.S. Lewis "Either this man was the son of God, or else a madman or comething worse". Jesus had to be the son of God otherwise he would have been mad to claim so
  • Ludwig Wittgenstein, Nietzsche, Tolstoy: power and authority of Jesus' teachings isn't about seperating Jesus from his miracles but following his actions on earth
  • Why see Jesus' teaching as the source of authority when the same words have been uttered on other wise peoples lips e.g. Muhammad, Buddha......no reason to adopt jesus' authority over others

Overall comparison

If Jesus was just a teacher of wisdom why is it that Christians have chosen to believe and follow his words over other wise men e.g, Muhammad
