James VI/I and Religion

To summarise James' handling of religion in his reign, he can be seen as creating a good balance between acknowledging the views of moderate Catholics and Puritans in the initial years of his reign. However, as the years went by (especially after 1618), the rise in anti-Catholicism meant it was difficult to keep a balance, and Puritans began to challenge the royal prerogative. The situation James left to Charles, however, was relatively stable considering the War being carried out across Europe
