James I: consolidating his monarchy
The accession of James I ushered in a new dynasty on the throne of England, and a century of turmoil and change. The union of England and Scotland proved to be a difficult process. The financial difficulties of the Crown placed increasingly severe restraints on royal action and the growing confidence of Parliament threw up prolems for both James and Charles.
