Causes

  • Introduction of the musket rifle to the Indian army, cartridges were greased in pig and cow  fat.
  • Rise of aggressive Evangelism to Hindus and Muslims
  • Doctrine of lapse. Used to gain land from widows
  • imports of British goods E.G. cloth.
  • Pay of the sepoys (soldiers)

Effects

  • Caused offence to Hindus and Muslims
  • Soldiers resented the British and the EIC.
  • seen as illegal by the Indian population, led to the mutiny.
  • Angered the population as Indian businesses couldn't thrive.
  • Sepoys wanted reform for the work they did overseas.

Overall summary

The mutiny was caused by a series of grievances by the EIC and as a result, rebels wanted to overthrow the EIC. There were great differences between them and they did no longer want to be conquered by the East India Company or Britain.
