Advantages

  • Smaller classes allow the teacher's attention to be wider spread
  • Better facilities due to good funding
  • Better exam results
  • School has a lot of power to deal with disruptive pupils
  • Places at good universities are more likely

Disadvantages

  • Only available to middle class children
  • Students usually have to travel a long distance
  • Usually same sex schools and White, British and middle class children
  • Less able students are likely held back and forgotten

Evaluation

Independent schools provide a high standard of education to children allowing them to continue onto good universities and enter high paying jobs. However these schools are only available to white British middle class children and so continues on the power divide between majority and minority. Also the educational pressures can become too much and attitudes in these schools mean that little support is given to struggling students.
