Incremental Backup

Incremental Backup

Advantages

  • Backup time is decreased as only data that changed since the last backup is needed.
  • As you are only backing up certain files less medium is used to store them.

Disadvantages

  • When performing a complete restore the latest full and all subsequent incremental backups are needed which increases the time taken to restore.
  • All increments have to be restored for a particular file to be recovered. If any one of the previous increments of a particular file fails, the entire file will be in an unrecoverable state.

Evaluation

Although the backup time quicker the restore time is significantly longer so take this into consideration when choosing a backup. An organisation running for 24 hours needs a quick backup  so files aren't unavailable for too long therefore incremental might be ideal.
