increase in single parent families - reasons and effects

Causes

  • SECULARISATION - Wilson identified a decline in religious power with the idea of marriage now being seen as irrelevant and many family types now not being stigmatised
  • FAMILY  LEGISLATION - divorce reform act '69 // same sex couples act '13 // adoption act '02

Effects

  • DYSFUNCTIONALISM -Murray argued that without two stable parents children will not be effectively socialised and underclass of dependancy culture will arise
  • FINANCIAL STRAIN - the ONS reported that double the amount of single parent families live in relative poverty compared to dual parent families
  • FAMILY DIVERSITY - Morgan has now adopted the term 'families' over the traditional 'family'

Overall summary

More single parent families may be present in contemporary society due to the reduced stigma of single-hood and the freedom to now divorce however, it may have lead to this arising of the 'underclass' with many of those in this family type living under financial strain. It cannot be argued however that they do attribute to an increased family diversity within today's society
