Implications Of The Digital Divide

Causes

  • Affordability of a computer.
  • Living in a remote area.
  • Disability or illness.
  • Censorship.
  • Lack of I.C.T knowledge and skills.
  • Some cultural factors could restrict gender use of I.C.T.

Effects

  • People with better I.C.T skills tend to be able to get better jobs.
  • Students who don't use computers tend to do worse than those who do have internet access.
  • If somebody doesn't have access to the internet in a modern society then they could socially feel left out.
  • Children might swap outside exercise with friends for gaming where health issues can arise.
  • The internet can help to improve a student's understanding of a course that they are studying.

Overall summary

Some of the most common causes for the digital divide include mainly factors that can be improved upon, eg. Better connection / network in rural areas and more education on I.C.T skills. The effects as well can be damaging to a person's life, an example would be the economic divide between those who do and don't have good I.C.T skills in the workplace, commonly as stated above those who do have better skills get better jobs and in turn are paid more and given better opportunities. Yet again though most of the effects can at least be numbed down by ensuring that some or all of the causes for the digital divide are addressed with some kind of solution.
