Advantages

  • 400 million fewer people have been born.
  • Standards of living have increased - more food and space.
  • Reducing population has allowed china to stop strain on public services - Education is better.
  • Children get more attention.
  • People can concentrate on their careers and caring for the elderly.
  • Expected famine never happened.
  • Country was praised for taking action.

Disadvantages

  • Women forced into sterilisations and abortions - this is illegal. Resisting women were torchered.
  • Female infanticide took place as Chinese society preferred boys.
  • Gender ratio can reach as high as 130 boys for every 100 girls.
  • Gender imbalance has caused kidnapping,42,000 kidnappings of women and children in 2001-2002, these women are sold into prostitution.
  • Men find it difficult to get married. As many as 40million single men in 2020.
  • Chinese boys became spoilt.
  • Children grew up with no brothers or sisters or aunties and uncles.
  • Rural families struggled.
  • 9/10 children died in orphanages.

Evaluation

WHAT THE POLICY INCLUDED:Started in 1979.Couples must have only one child.Have to be over 24 years old before they can get married.Women must be sterilised after their first child.Women must abort further pregnancies after their 1st child.Couples were offered a 5-10% salary rise if they had one child.A couple who disobey the rules will have their salaries cut by 10%.Han race makes up most of china, smaller races will die out.Couples who disobey the rules will have to pay for the healthcare and education of both children.
