Hosting global sporting events

Advantages

  • raise awareness of profile of sport= participation
  • increased funding for sport involved
  • new/improved venues= +ve legacy of facilities
  • golden triangle= increased sponsorship & media coverage
  • use of facilities for local communities
  • improved local transport systems
  • accommodation can be used eg. London 2012 Olympic village used as housing
  • jobs created for building & during event
  • increased tourism
  • sales in area due to event and sales at event
  • income to country through spectators & participants
  • individuals, parties & leaders gain credit if bid is successful
  • unite parties eg. 2012 bid was unanimous across parties
  • 'shop window' for culture & commerce, show country in +ve light

Disadvantages

  • participation increases at the time but current trend is a gradual decline
  • facilities may not be used eg. Barcelona Olympic stadiums
  • minority sports can suffer eg. squash is not an Olympic sport
  • sports deviance is more likely to be highlighted by the media
  • some areas may not get the same facility benefits
  • some areas may not get the same transport benefits
  • local inhabitants may have to be re-housed due to building
  • jobs created are not long term
  • event can cost more to host compared to its revenue
  • biding can be expensive
  • if something goes wrong, politicians are responsible eg. terrorist attack
  • if host country goes poorly, this reflects on country eg. Berlin 1936, Jesse Owens
  • environmental impact
