History Michaelmas Test: Treaty of Versailles

Causes

  • Treaty of Versailles (Germany)

Effects

  • Making Germany pay reparations for damaged, restricting Germany's army and making Germany take the blame for causing the war. Much German industrial land was given to the Mandates. This led to unemployment and economic crisis, and rebelling and starvation among the poor German population. Countries such as Britain did not trade with Germany, and World Trade suffered as a result.

Overall summary

Germany were not happy with the treaty as they felt it was not justified correctly. Britain was so-so with the treaty, as they felt it was a little harsh, although they did receive a lot of money and land. France was fairly happy with the treaty, however they felt it could have been harsher and USA were happy with the treaty, as lots of countries (e.g. Poland) got independence, and self determination
