Advantages

  • Cheaper than sea walls
  • Reducing longshore drift means build up of beach

Disadvantages

  • Short lifespan
  • Reduces recreational value of beach
  • Reduction of longshore drift can lead to higher erosion rates downdrift (terminal groyne syndrome)
  • Ongoing maintenance cost
  • Using tropical woods will mean it's unsustainable

Evaluation

Groynes are wooden constructions built perpendicular to the shoreline to limit longshore drift, increase sedimentation rates and build up beaches.The disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
