hard engineering

the advantages and disadvantages of hard engineering

?

hard engineering

Advantages

  • effective when protecting built up coastal areas
  • groynes good at slowing down londshore drift, building up beaches which protects coastal areas behind  them

Disadvantages

  • expensive- £3-8 million per km
  • groynes stop movement of sediment down coast reducing beach levels and increasing erosion
  • unslightly to look at

Evaluation

when used correctly, hard engineering can be a very effective way of preventing erosion in dveloped areas, however some hard engineering defences like groynes can cause problems for areas down the coast without the correct protection from coastal erosion.
