German Revolution 1918

Causes

  • Failure in WW1
  • Hardship caused by the war - food shortages, illness, many dead, etc.
  • The Russian Revolution caused discontent. Many Germans wanted to copy the Russians and overthrow their Kaiser, replacing him with councils of workers.

Effects

  • Revolution took place with Friedrich Ebert being appointed Chancellor.
  • The new government agreed on an armistice.
  • The Weimar Republic was set up.
  • The Treaty of Versailles was agreed.

Overall summary

The revolution meant the loss of the undemocratic emperor, however the people were not happy with the new government because the TofV was too harsh.Overall living conditions did not improve and there were still food shortages.
