Option 3 - rural health clinics

Advantages

  • PEOPLE:
  • Reduces maternal mortality rate
  • Reduces infant mortality rate
  • Reduces amount of people dying from treatable illnesses
  • Drug treatment for HIV means that less people die from HIV, so there are more people for farming
  • WEALTH:
  • Free treatment means that people aren't left in debt

Disadvantages

  • PEOPLE:
  • 30 minutes may be too long to get to a clinic, so people could die on the way
  • May not be enough medicine
  • Medicine for some illnesses may not be available

Evaluation

Option 3 is for the issue of 'health in rural areas'. The advantages of building rural health clinics in Uganda outweigh the disadvantages. Problems in Uganda such as maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate would be reduced, and free treatment would mean that it is available to everyone. However, the problem of distance may not change deaths from illnesses and may mean that rural health clinics serve as more of a disadvantage.
