GCSE D&T Resistant Materials: Tools and Processes - CAD/CAM

Advantages

  • Save money in the long run
  • Easy to develop and edit from all angles - easy to experiment with materials and finishes
  • Can produce very realistic designs quickly on screen - helps boss/client understand the proposition
  • Products can be machined at high speed and run 24 hours a day = lots in a short space of time
  • Machines can work in human hazardous conditions i.e. paint spraying
  • High quality and more reliable finish (no human error involved)
  • Labour cost are lower

Disadvantages

  • Very expensive to buy and set up
  • Computers can be affected by software problems, viruses and corrupted files - potentially slowing down production
  • Fewer workers = unemployment increase and traditional skills could be lost
  • Traditional one off edge of product lost

Evaluation

Overall using CAD/CAM is very beneficial and as with everything there are going to be disadvantages, but I feel the advantages out-weigh these.
