Frankenstein's behaviour towards his scientific project

Frankenstein's Personal Relationships

  • Ironic how he possesses all of the knowledg needed to become a creator but none of the knowledge to become a father.
  • He rejects the creature immediately after its creation, calling it a 'wretch' and leaving it to fend for itself. This shows how irresponsible he is.
  • After the creature comes to life, Frankenstein refuses to care for it, shelter for it, provide it with food or love, or even teach him like a father should do.
  • Victor's 'dream vanished' when he saw how ugly his creation was. This shows that Victor has no respect for people without a good appearance.
  • Walton - Both characters are stuck in isolation, with only the dangers of knowledge to comfort them, leading them into dark unseen places. They both seek the unknown because it offers them hope to escape their loneliness.
  • Elizabeth - Repition of 'my' shows that Victor sees her as his property. 'I thought that I held the corpse of my dead mother in my arms' Victor foreshadows Elizabeth's death.
  • Henry - 'The first time during many months, calm and serene joy' Seeing Henry is the first bit of happiness in months since the creation of the creature.

Frankenstein As A Narrator (AO1)

Key Quotations

  • When Victor compares his feelings to those of Justines, who was condemned to be executed, Victor assures the readers that 'the tortures of the accused did not equal to mine' (pg 86) - We feel that he is a little too self absorbed to be the best interpretor of other people's feelings. He is an unreliable narrator.
  • Victor's Ambition: 'A new species would bless me as its creator and source'
  • On his work:' I pursued nature to her hiding-places. Who shall conceive the horrors of my secret toil...?'
