Food and Health: Food to avoid in pregnancy

Causes

  • Eating raw/lightly cooked eggs, meat and poultry
  • Drinking/eating unpasteurised milk or dairy products (e.g. yoghurt or cheese)
  • Eating soft/ blue vein cheese, pate and some ready meals
  • Raw/lightly cooked meat and unwashed fruit and vegetables
  • Eating liver or liver products
  • Eating swordfish, marlin, shark

Effects

  • Contains Salmonella, which causes miscarriage or premature birth

  • Contain Listeria bacteria, which may cause  miscarriage, stillbirth, meningitis, sight and hearing problems
  • May contain parasite, which contain toxoplasmosis, which can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, hydrocephalus and/or eye damage
  • Have too much Vitamin A Build up od Vitamin A is toxic to baby and may cause birthing defects
  • Has high levels of mercury , can damage baby's nervous system

Overall summary

A pregnant women should eat healthily and there is no need to eat significantly more. They should remove the risk of food poisoning from their diet as can have issue for the baby.
