Flag and Out of the Blue

Similarities

  • Both have a theme of power, Out of Blue - how someone has power over control of situation, and how poet is losing it. Flag has power of patriotism
  • Both use rhetorical questions, Flag uses it to question why it is important, Out of Blue uses it for the poet to wonder why it is her.
  • Both have repetition  in it, Out of Blue uses different word eg "waving, Waving" to replicate the wobbliness of the video its based one. The repetition of "Its just a piece of cloth" in Flag emphaisises how a flag is not important.

Differences

  • Out of Blue uses metaphor - the man is a metaphor for everyone's heartbreak.
  • Flag uses more powerful dynamic verbs as the poem progresses to show this idea that flags become powerful. Out of Blue does not have anything like this.
  • Out of Blue has a theme of Hope and fear. Flag has themes futility of war, war and consciense and patriotism.

Overall comparison

Overall, Both use certain techniques like repetition to convey different things. They also use structure in similar ways - both have even regular stanzas The themes are not similar at al, except for power which is portrayed ion different ways.
