Role

  • Estragon is very forgetful 'do you remember the gospels?' 'I remember the maps of the holy land. Coloured they were. Very pretty. The Dead sea was pale blue.
  • He gives up from the very beginning ' Nothing to be done' and is more accepting of the reality. He is also the one that constantly repeats this 'funny the more you eat the worse it gets'
  • He is often associated with the boot which represents the struggle ' is trying to take of his boot. He pulls  at it with both hands panting. He gives up, exhausted, rests, tries again. '
  • He embraces qualities of Freud 'id' that acts on primal instincts 'hell' ' I'm going'
  • Whilst Vladimir appears as the more rational character, Estragon is more aware to the absurdity of life. '  people are bloody ignorant apes' He is very sceptical and doubts the appearance of Godot 'and if he comes
  • Unlike Vladimir he also takes comfort in dreams as a form of escapism ' I had a dream... why won't you ever let me sleep'. This is the simple solution to their suffering, yet Vladimir constantly looks to Godot as a means of salvation despite not knowing what he wants from him '  personally I wouldn't even know him if I saw him'
  • Estragon is also a very agitated character who constantly wants to be satisfied ' is that all there is' ( in reference to the carrot). He also gazes into ' the extreme right' and 'extreme left'
  • Estragon mistakes Pozzo for Godot ' Bozoo...Bozzo'
  • At the same time Estragon desires Godot ' I confess... I imagined... for a second'
  • Pozzo asks what is Estragon name and he says ' Adam'
  • Estragon was once a poet
  • Occasionally, he is conscious of their suffering 'They all change. We can't.' ' I'm unhappy' However, he can never realise that he is the cause of his own suffering.
  • Estragon acts very 'violently' towards the boy
  • Estragon is a misanthrope ' people are bloody ignorant apes'

  • Towards the end of Act one he becomes more and more impatient ' another will come just as, as... me
  • All my life I've compared myself to Christ
  • remind me to bring a piece of rope tomorrow
  • The fact the constantly doubts his relationship with Vladimir ' I wonder if we wouldn't have been better off tomorrow' shows he's naivety. He believes the problem resides between each other failing to realise it is self inflicted. Later on his dialogue with himself is stichomythic
  • Where language fails, their actions become more important ' Don't touch me... speak to me.. Stay with me
  • He forgets Pozzo and Lucky but remember somebody 'gave me a bone' and the 'lunatic who kicked the shins of me'
  • Estragon becomes more pessimistic ' the best thing would be to kill me'... ' like billions of others'. He constantly picks up on the idea of suffering, death yet, he fails to rectify it. He just accepts for what it is and therefore, they do not progress throughout the play. ' I've puked my puke of a life away here'
  • a radish... is that all there is? 'I'll go get a carrot [ he does not move]
  • I'm going [ he does not move]
  • Nobody comes, nobody goes, It's awful!
