ENERGY RESOURCES-Water (hydroelectric, tidal and wave)

Advantages

  • renewable-no waste of non-renewable resources
  • no release of CO2
  • no release of SO2
  • Low maintenance-no fuel has to be paid for
  • can become a tourist amenity if a new large lake is created for fishing

Disadvantages

  • only suitable for hilly mountainous regions with high rainfall-only suitable for particular sites which may be inconveniently located for electricity users
  • occupies a large area-loss of scenic amenity
  • land has to be flooded-loss of habitat
  • unusable during droughts-not enough water behind the dam
  • (waves)-needs a suitable site where waves are consisitently strong
  • some designs are noisy
  • needs to be able to withstand rough weather

Evaluation

Water can be in the form of hydroelectric energy when a damn is built accross a river to trap water to create a resevoir.Or it can be tidal in which the damm is built accross an estuary, or it can be in wave in which floats move up and down with the waves. In hydroelectric and tidal energy the gravitational potential energy of the water at the top of the dam is converted into kinetic electricity as the water falls. This is used to turn turbines giving them kinetic energy. The turbines cause generators to rotate which transfers the energy into electrical energy.Wave power is different as the water is not falling through a height onto turbines. The kinetic energy of the water in the wave is used to turn the turbines to give them kinetic energy. The turbines then cause generators to rotate which transfers the energy into electrical energy.
