ENERGY RESOURCES-Fossil Fuels

Advantages

  • Very large amounts of electricity can be generated in one place using coal-fairly cheaply
  • transporting oil and gas to power stations is easy-reduces transport cocsts
  • gas firedpower stations are very efficient- reduing cost of electricity
  • Can be built almost anywhere-as long as you get large quantities of fuel to it

Disadvantages

  • non renewable- oil will run out soon
  • pollution-burning produces CO2 which contributes to greenhouse effect
  • burning coal produces more CO2 than oil or gas
  • Burning coal produces SO2-gives rise to acid rain
  • mining coal is difficult dangerous and can destroy habitat
  • Coal powered fire stations need huge amounts of fuel -trainloads of coal almost constantly
  • Station needs reserves-covering a large area of countryside next to the power station with piles of coal

Evaluation

Coal, oil and gas are fossil fuels. They are burned to produce thermal energy which is then used to heat water and turn it into steam, with kinetic energy, which is then used to turn turbines giving them kinetic energy . The turbines then cause generators to rotate which transfers the energy to electrical energy.
