ENERGY RESOURCES-Geothermal

Advantages

  • Does not prduce any air pollution therefore doesn't contribute to greenhouse effect
  • power stations do not take up much room-not much impact on the environment
  • no fuel is needed-no transport is needed
  • once built-energy is almost free

Disadvantages

  • not many places to build as hot rocks are needed of a suitable type, at a depth where you can drill down to them + rock above must be easy to drill through
  • Can 'run out of steam' -possibly for decades so is not reliable for long term
  • hazardous gases and minerals may come up from underground, which can be difficult to safely dispose of

Evaluation

Where water is heated by hot rocks deep underground. The water could be from a naturally occuring spring or it could be pumped underground to be heated. Thermal energy of the rocks is transfered to water, producing steam that has kinetc energy. The kinetic energy is then used to turn turbines giving them kinetic energy which causes generators to rotate therefore producing electrical energy.,
