Empiricist account of using perceptual information

Advantages

  • Infants notice novel items from familiar category (Pauen, 2002)
  • Infants notice a novel category (Pauen, 2002)
  • Even with artificial exemplars there is a novelty preference (Pauen, 2002)

Disadvantages

  • Could be based only on perceptual differences between animals and furniture
  • Animals and furniture have different legs. textures etc.

Evaluation

If perceptual information was the most important thing then we would find a different effect than before by using artificial exemplars. But there is still a novelty effect, suggesting that perceptual similarity isn't the only basis for category formation and that by 11 months infants already have a concept of 'living things'
