Embryo Screening

Advantages

  • Becoming more reliable & accurate
  • Less traumatic
  • Can mentally prepare if they want to keep the child (ie. buying correct equipment)
  • Prevents a child being born into pain / suffering
  • Gives the parents an informed choice - yes or no
  • Embryos can be selected for ones that don't have the disorder (specific to embryo screening)
  • Saves parents from pain & stress
  • Parents don't have to give up their jobs
  • Siblings may feel less appreciated as focus is on affected child

Disadvantages

  • Can sometimes give a false positive or negative result
  • Have to make a decision whether to keep or terminate the baby, but result may be incorrect
  • May terminate a healthy baby due to false negative result
  • Increases the risk of miscarraiges
  • People worried that others will use it for the wrong reason such as a particular sex or eye colour etc...
  • Objections towards them "living a lesser life" with a disorder
  • Decision's being made by the parents not the one affected
  • Large percentage of affected people would rather be born with their disorder than not be born at all

Evaluation

Generally balanced response. In my opinion, embryo screening is a good idea if you want to prepare yourself for if you have an affected baby, although terminating it may not be a valid response. The 'designer baby' concept is also one that is deemed inappropriate by many people.
