Economics Unit 1 Division of Labour

Advantages

  • A person who spends time on one task quickly become highly skilled in it
  • No time is wasted moving from one job to another
  • Capital equipment can be used continuously in production (e.g. the machinery on a motor vehicle production line)
  • Less time is required to train workers
  • There is more choice of jobs for workers and they can specialise in tasks they are most suited to.

Disadvantages

  • Repetition creates monotony and boredom.
  • There could be a high turnover of staff and increased recruitment costs
  • Could lead to structural unemployment as staff are replaced by machinery
  • If one group of workers goes on strike, it can cause a halt in production.
