  • Extra chromosome - 47 in total

Effects

  • Flat face
  • Slanty eyes
  • Small ears
  • Large tongue
  • Poor muscle tone
  • Grow at a slower rate
  • Heart problems
  • Developmental delays e.g. sitting, crawling and walking
  • Learning / learning difficulty
  • Speech
  • Delay in self care skills e.g. feeding, dressing and toilet training

Overall summary

Down's syndrome babies are very different to other children, they will have trouble learning things at the same speed as normal children their age. They will also grow at a slower rate and their facial features may be slightly different.
