- Hypocritical, after refusing to marry so many 'milkfed' young men she accepts two wives
- Ability to respect diversity, but also fails to regard everybody as 'one' thus going against Olinka principles
- She does her bit for racial relations by fostering Harry, however she produces in him a silent observesness
- She is a key contributer to change nonetheless
- Succesful Missionary
|
- Doris Baines success as a missionary comes simply from not caring- she only came to Africa to be alone.
- She therefore represents a division of races in society: as a white wealthy woman she has the money to bring sucess as a missionary, whereas the black missionarys have desire and dreams to help them, but lack of faith to allow them to progress
- Doris Baines is an example of what the black women could be like if they werent prevented through poverty
- She is rewarded with solitude and grandchildren, implying that she has had all the benefits but minimal responsibilities, whereas Nettie and Samuel have been burdened by responsibilities
