Discuss the use of animals in psychological research using Yamamoto as an example.

Advantages

  • Give important practical applications. Lots of insight into medicine, behaviourism, and the mind and brain. Yamamoto gave insight to theory of mind important cognitive mechanism.
  • Generalisable according to darwin as we have evolved from animals therefore results are valid as they apply to humans
  • chimps respond less to demand characteristics and order effects.

Disadvantages

  • not easily generalisable. 5 mother offspring pairings. genetic make up not that similar rats are more similar 75%
  • Expensive. housing. Primate Research institute in kyoto university

Evaluation

Animals are imperative to furthering understanding of both humans and animals themselves and ethical guidelines are in place to minimise distress.
