Direct Realism Overview

Advantages

  • P: common sense view; E: most people take this view before critical thinking
  • P: defence of perceptual variation; E: relational properties that are perceived differently; E: agreement on colour of sky
  • P: defence of illusions; E: potential for misinterpretation; E: seeing an illusion but realising mistake afterwards
  • P: defence of hallucinations; E: awareness afterwards OR not true perception
  • P: defence of causal argument; E: if true, we'd be aware of process > event
  • P: time lag argument; E: simply delayed without change

Disadvantages

  • P: weak; E: external world is different from perception; E: perceptual variation (Russell's table/Berkeley's cloud/Locke's water temp.) + illusions + hallucinations + causal argument + time lag argument

Evaluation

Weak bc it's obvious we don't perceive things directly
