Differential Backup

?

Differential Backup

Advantages

  • Restoring is faster than incremental as only the last full backup and latest differential is needed.
  • Backing up is faster than full backup as only changed files are required.
  • The storage space requirements are smaller than full backup.

Disadvantages

  • Restoring is slower than full backup as the last full backup AND the latest differential backup is needed.
  • Backing up is slower than incremental as everything changed since the last FULL backup only is backed up.
  • The storage space requirements are higher than incremental backup.

Evaluation

when choosing what backup method to use you need to consider whether you want faster restoring or faster backup. Differential is ideal if you need faster restoring however incremental is better for faster backup.
