Did the New Deal create a New Society?

Advantages

  • Restored people's faith in the Government
  • The New Deal was a huge economic and social program. Government help on this scale wouldn't have been available before
  • Set the way for future goverment
  • Handled billions of public money, but there were no corruption scandals. For example, the head of the CWA Harry Hopkins distributed $10 billion in schemes but never earned more than his salary - $15,000
  • Harold Ickes tapped his employees phones to make sure they weren't breaking the law, employed African Americans, campaigned against Antisemitism and supported Native Americans

Disadvantages

  • Divided America. Roosevelt was accused of being a communist and undermining American ideas. Ickes and Hopkins were accused of being anti-business because they supported trade unions
  • Undermined local government

Evaluation

Overall, the New Deal restored people's faith and confidence in the Government as a whole, but individually the people responsible were viewed as socialist/communist supporters, something America feared greatly.
