Determinism - For and Against

Advantages

  • The value of research is that the prediction and control of human behaviour has led to development of treatments an therapies in which people mental disorders such as schizophrenia sufferers experience a total loss of control casting doubt about the concept free will
  • Cause and effect is testable
  • Interactionism - believe there is a cognitive element about childhood experience and our environmental factors e.g. Bandura and the social learning theory ( Soft Determinism)

Disadvantages

  • Unfalsifiable - believes that causes will exist within behaviour , this is impossible to test
  • In the legal system it is not possible as offenders are held accountable except from a few insanity cases others they are morally not accounted for
  • Biological determinism - Our characteristics are not 100% determined such as in MZ studies there are never 100% concordance rate
  • Environmental determinism - There must be some genetic input as there are never 0% concordance rates
  • Psychic determinism - Dennett argues that there can never be full determinism and things more such as the butterfly effect which states that casual relationships are more probabilistic than determined

Evaluation

Advantages = ForDisadvantages = Against
