Demographic patterns- BIRTH RATE

Causes

  • FALLING INFANT MORTALITY RATE - (5/1000). As such a small number of infants die, there is less pressure on families to compensate for these losses. This has fallen due to better living conditions and health.
  • CHANGES IN THE ROLE OF WOMEN - Better access to divorce, abortion, contraception, changing attitudes, education, paid employment etc. The traditional role for a woman is no longer as a mother.
  • CHILD CENTREDNESS - Due to legal & values changes to the position of women, they are  subjected to longer periods of dependency therefore parents have to concentrate on their development for longer.

Effects

  • FALLING BIRTH RATE - all 3 ways to measure birthrate has fallen since 1990
  • This means a falling population UNLESS migration patterns/decrease ofdeath rate compensate.

Overall summary

However, despite this the UK population has increased immensley. This is because the death rate has fallen considerably. People have said we have a "top heavy" population, this is where we have more older generations than we do of the younger one.
