Cyclone Nargis (Tropical Revolving storm LIC)

Causes

  • Storm formed on bay of Bengal during last week of April
  • Upgraded to a cyclone on 28th April
  • Hit coast of Burma on may 2nd
  • No dedicated hurricane monitoring system, Indian weather forecasters did warn them 24hrs before
  • Burmese weather forecast over TV and radio(poor + rural didn't know) and didn't explain severity
  • no emergency or evacuation plan

Effects

  • Social -  >140 000 killed,450 000 homes destroyed,4000 schools destroyed/damaged, almost 70% with no access to clean water, poor sanitary conditions led to disease
  • Environmental - 38 000 hectares of mangrove destroyed, erosion and salination of land
  • Economic - total cost of $4billion,65% rice paddies damaged,>40% of food stores destroyed

Overall summary

Responses:-Government initially refused foreign aid, accepted donations from 9th May, ASEAN held emergency summit on 19th May and Burma allowed aid workers from ASEAN countries in-All aid workers allowed on 23rd May(3 weeks after event) after talks with Burmese Leader and UN Secretary General
