Contemporary Study; Replicating Milgram

Advantages

  • Ethics; rigorous screening left only suitable participants
  • Ethics; the participant was given a 15v shock not a 45v shock
  • Ethics; experimentor was a psychologist looking out for excessive stress
  • Ethics; the participant couldn't go further than 150v
  • Right to withdraw; informed 3 times that they could leave without consequence
  • Generalisability; Burger used a wider range of genders and ethnicitys

Disadvantages

  • Ethics; deliberately put into a situation that they knew would cause anxiety
  • Right to withdraw; prods removed any established right to withdraw temporarily
  • Results; we have to assume that those that were willing to go past 150v would have gon eall the way up to 450v
  • Ecological validity; still laboratory research so hard to generalise

Evaluation

Burger's experiment was ethically so much better, deliberate stress couldn't be avoided but excessive stress was, and those more likely to be negatively effected weren't allowed to participate in the study. Although Burger uses a more diverse range of participants, the experiment still lacks ecological validity as it's not a usual/common situation.
