Comparing Marcionism and Gnosticism

Similarities

  • Both were troubled by the problem of evil and suffering
  • Both put forward the idea of different gods
  • Both said creation was the work of a lesser god
  • Both shared a docetist view of Christ
  • Both rejected the OT as scripture
  • Both did not believe in the resurrection of the body

Differences

  • Marcionism believed in salvation through faith where as Gnosticism believed in salvation through knowledge
  • M believed salvation was open to all, where as g believed it was just for an elect
  • M interpreted the Bible literally where as G thought there was secret. knowledge
  • M did not believe in the many heavens and angels between this world and god

Overall comparison

"It is clear that Marcion held some beliefs commonly regarded as Gnostic" BANDIn many ways they were similar and Marcion has sometimes been seen as a GnosticHowever there are some striking differences between Marcion's teachings and the beliefs of the Gnostics
