Compare and contrast table for Snowball and Napoleon

Similarities

  • Both wanted the rebellion to happen
  • Both ran for leadership
  • Both wanted to build the windmill (but Napoleon didn't admit it at first'
  • Even though Napoleon was by far the bigger dictator in the novella (and in history- Stalin-) Snowball shared some of these qualities as well.                                                                                                                   This can be seen when the milk and apples go missing, and then it is found out the pigs are using it for themselves and not sharing it. Snowball is a pig and is therefore aware of this as the pigs are supposed to be intelligent and so he must of known what was going on and that the pigs took it not for their health like they had suggested but for their own selfish needs and so shares Napoleons and the rest of the pigs self interest and greed (but seems to have less of it)

Differences

  • Napoleon is the example of a more dictatorial leader, he shows this through the novella as he grows more greedy and corrupt and uses fear to keep people on his side and in line- example of this is by using his dogs to growl at the animals in order to scare them and execute the 'traitors'
  • Snowball, during his brief time at the farm, seems to be more interested in the ideas of the revolution and the people- an example of this is when he thinks of the windmill idea so the animals could work less and how he tells Mollie that she doesn't need the sugar cubes and ribbons- which shows his yearn to do justice to Old majors idealistic views
  • Napoleon favoured the pigs over the other animals, snowball treated them equally
  • Napoleon wanted to be leader but Snowball was more favoured (thats why he was chased out)

Overall comparison

even though they share both similarities and differences they seem to be more different than alike due to their character qualities- however this may be due to Snowballs short lived time on the farm as there is no way of knowing if he would become exactly as greedy and horrible as Napoleon if was not chased away as though he seems like the ideal leader for Animal Farm, Orwell's message that Power Corrupts and Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely hints that regardless of who the leader of Animal Farm would be, the revolution was doomed to fail from the beginning.Source(s)
